Building Momentum: The Motivation to Worship

Our brother, Abu Hafsah Kashiff Khan, begins this reminder with mentioning that the argument of the western Christians in their da'wah is that one must believe in God to be a moral and just person and that without religion (i.e. without Christianity) one will necessarily be an immoral person. However, a recent study done through scientific research methods, which has led modern non-Muslim society to the conclusion that Atheism does not increase immorality, thus putting the Christian argument to rest. Then, the speaker proceeds to expound upon the the proper reason and motivation to worship Allaah, as outlined in the Qur`an and explained by the orthodox Muslim Scholars of the past.

The Sunnah is Islaam and Islaam is the Sunnah

Imaam al-Barbahaari (rahimahullaah) said:

All praise is for Allaah who guided us to Islaam and blessed us with it and placed us in the best nation, so we ask Him to grant us that we keep to that which He loves and is pleased with and avoid that which He hates and which angers Him.

Know that Islam is the Sunnah, and the Sunnah is Islaam[1] and one of them cannot be established without the other.

NOTES

1. The Prophet said, "He who turns away from my Sunnah is not from me." Reported by al-Bukhaaree (Eng. trans. 7/1-2/no.l), Muslim (Eng. Trans. 2/703/n0.3236) and an-Nasaa'ee.

Abu Hurairah said that Allaah's Messenger said, "All of my Ummah will enter Paradise except those who refuse." It was said, "Who will refuse?" He replied. "Whoever obeys me enters Paradise and whoever disobeys me has refused." Reported by al-Bukhaaree (Eng. trans. 9/284/n0.384).

Imaam az-Zuhree (the famous taabi'ee, d.124H) said,"The people of knowledge who came before us used to say,'Salvation lies in clinging to the Sunnah.'" Reported by ad-Daarimee in his Sunan (no.96).

Imaam Maalik said,"The Sunnah is like the Ark of Noah. Whoever embarks upon it reaches salvation and whoever refuses is drowned." Quoted by Shaikh ul-Islaam Ibn Taimiyyah in Majmoo' ul-fataawaa (4/57).

Book Recommendation:Upright Moral Character

Author: Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-'Uthaymeen.

In a time when the West pushes its deficient values and misguided moral codes on the cultures of the world, it is imperative that Muslims realize the completeness of the guidance of the Messenger of Allaah (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace), and realize that our true honor and distinction among the nations, as well as our success in the Hereafter, lies in embracing his guidance, in all affairs of belief and action. Based on the scholars' continual advice to the Muslim youth, combined with the specific need that Muslims in the West have to understand and implement upright moral character, the importance of this book and the need for its translation into the English language becomes crystal clear. And what better guidebook than one based on the character of the Messenger of Allaah (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace), authored by an exemplary scholar like Shaykh Ibn al-'Uthaymeen, known for his outstanding manners!

Should a Muslim Follow One of the Four Madhaahib?

By Shaykh Mashhoor Hasan Salmaan
A reply to the question: Do you advise a Muslim to follow one of the four madhaahib, using it as a source reference whenever there are conflicting opinions? Does following a madh-hab lead to success? And should a Muslim follow the opinion of other scholars as found in the books (of fiqh) that mentions the various opinions (of the different madhaahib)?

Extract from the article:-

Thus, whoever calls to following one imaam to the exclusion of the others, and obligates the ummah to follow that particular scholar - from amongst the four Imaams or those before or after them - then this person is misguided, sinful, and innovative. We are not Bakrees, 'Umarees, 'Uthmaanees, or 'Alawees. We are Muslims who submit to the commands of Allaah Azza wa Jal. Hence we do not worship except Allaah, and we do not follow except the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). We ascribe ourselves to Islaam. So the call that it is obligatory to follow only one scholar is misguidance and impermissible, and this is what took place amongst the latter generations of those who adhere to a madh-hab.

As for teaching the people by beginning with the basics, loving and hating based upon the obedience of Allaah, working to give victory to the deen, calling the people to the deen, and connecting them with Allaah and the last day; then these matters have been overlooked these days. To the point whereby a person would smile in the face of his brother if he is from his group; if not, he ignores him and pays no attention to him, even though he may be more upright and knowledgeable than him. Hence hizbiyyah has become the new madh-habism.

Concerning the Claim: Salafiyyah is not from Islam

Answered by the Noble Shaykh, Dr. Saalih Ibn Fawzaan al-Fawzaan
Shaykh al-Fawzaan refutes Al Areefi's claim that 'salafiyyah is not from Islam' defending it (salafiyyah) as the Manhaj (methodology) of truth and that we proceed upon it and we leave those who oppose it.

“Then Salafiyyah is the methodology of truth which is compulsory for us to proceed upon and to leave what opposes it from the other methodologies and its people. Andtheir people (the Salafees) are from the saved sect, Ahlus-Sunnah Wal Jama'ah andthey are the aided group until the day of judgment, may Allaah make us from them.”

Guidelines to Conduct a Self- Assessment

Produced by Ibn Il-Qayyim (d.751H) who said, "And mankind, with regard to their performance of prayer are of five levels:

The First: The level of the one who is negligent and wrongs his soul. He is the one who falls short in performing ablution properly, performing the prayer upon its time and within its specified limits, and in fulfilling its essential pillars.

The Second: The one who guards his prayers upon their proper times and within their specified limits, fulfils their essential pillars and performs his ablution with care. However, his striving (in achieving the above) is wasted due to whisperings in his prayer so he is taken away by thoughts and ideas.

The Third: The one who guards his prayers within the specified limits, fulfils their essential pillars and strives with himself to repel the whisperings, thoughts and ideas. He is busy struggling against his enemy (shaytaan) so that he does not steal from the prayer. On account of this he is engaged in (both) prayer and jihaad.

The Fourth: The one who stands for the prayer, completes and perfects its due rights, its essential pillars, performs it within its specified limits and his heart becomes engrossed in safeguarding its rights and specified limits, so that nothing is wasted from it. His whole concern is directed towards its establishment, its completion and perfection, as it should be. His heart is immersed in the prayer and in enslavement to his Lord, the Exalted.

The Fifth: The one who stands for the prayer like the one mentioned above. However, on top of this, he has taken and placed his heart in front of his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, looking towards Him with his heart with anticipation, (his heart) filled with His love and His might, as if he sees and witnesses Allaah. The whisperings, thoughts and ideas have vanished and the coverings which are between him and his Lord are raised. What is between this person and others with respect to the prayer, is superior and greater than what is between the heavens and the earth. This person is busy with his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, delighted with Him.

The first type will be punished, the second type will be held to account, the third will have his sins and shortcomings expiated, the fourth will be rewarded and the fifth will be close to his Lord, because he will receive the portion of one who makes his prayer the delight and pleasure of his eye.

Whoever makes the prayer the delight and pleasure of his eye, will have the nearness to his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, made the delight and pleasure of his eye in the hereafter. He will also be made a pleasure to the eye in this world since whoever makes Allaah the pleasure of his eye in this world, every other eye will become delighted and pleased with him."

Patience in the Face of Afflications by Abu Idrees Muhammad

This lecture was recorded at Masjid As Salafi in Small Heath, Birmingham UK during the Birmingham 2008 Winter Conference.

Speaker: Abu Idrees Muhammad

Advice to those who give da'wah - Shaykh Muqbil (rahimahullah)

This is an advice I give to myself first and foremost and to my other brothers who give the da'wah.

Shaikh Muqbil said about the statement of Allah: "Have patience in a beatiful manner" It is important for a caller to Allah to have patience because he will meet the ignorant, the stubborn, the one who is jealous and the sinner. And I advice the one who gives da'wah to not go to the courts or the rulers if he is harmed from the people because this will keep him busy from seeking knowledge.

And then he mentioned the statement of Allah: "And if the ignorant speak to them they honourably avoid them." And Allah said: "And if they hear vain talk they turn away from it."

Determining the Right Way

When people enter into Islaam, they sometimes become confused by the numerous Islaamic parties, groups and sect, find which one is upon the clear white path which Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) left us upon.

My brothers and sisters, life is short so we must make sure that before we die we secure the key that will take us to al-Jannah (Heaven). Please download the following PDF Article from our sourced from our brothers at troid.org that we will benefit in clarifying the the path that Ahlus Sunnah are upon.

Why The People of Hizbiyyah (Partisanship) Deflect From The Ranks of Ahlus-Sunnah

So the likes of the people of hizbiyyaat and the people of the slipshod jam’iyyaat; then I advise the brothers not to attend their gatherings; and that they give them no opportunity for debate with them.

For a man once came to Imaam Maalik and said:

‘I wish to debate with you!’ So Imaam Maalik said:

‘So if you subdue me?’ (i.e. in debate) So he said:

'You will then follow me.’ So Imaam Maalik said:

‘And what if another man comes and debates with me and subdues me?’ So he said:

‘You will then follow him.’ Then he (Maalik) said:

‘So our Religion thus becomes liable to roving; go to one who doubts like yourself – for I am upon certainty/continuance with regard my Religion.’

So the issue is an issue of commodity. For most of the people of Jam’iyyatul Hikmah and Jam’iyyatul Ihsaan studied with us; and they know what we are upon. So why did they then deflect? They were unable to be patient with that which the students of knowledge were upon here, nor with that which our brothers from ‘Aden were patient upon.

Rather they ran a race from Ta’iz and Ibb and San’aa to Qatar and the Land of the Haramain (Saudi Arabia) whilst saying:

((Me and the one who sponsors the orphan will be like these two))*

and they say also:

((…And that which you put forth for yourselves by way of good, then you will find it with Allaah. It is better and greater in reward…)) (Soorah Al-Muzzammil: 20)

However; that which concerns them is: the attainment of Dollars. So I say: Uff!** to knowledge whose end result is beggary. It was due to this that they fell. Jam’iyyatul Islaah has fallen and has fallen into spying – so the people should not think that we are silent over Jam’iyyatul Islaah. We also have a treatise Alhamdulillaah with the title: ‘Dham al-mas’alah’ done due to that which we saw from them in their race – and they have no concern except in gathering wealth. So thereafter they wage war with it upon the Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam).

Are the Khawārij Those Who Only Revolt against a Just Ruler?

Question: What is your view of someone who says, “The Khawārij are the people who revolt only against a legitimate and just ruler. As for someone who revolts against an actual oppressive ruler, then he is not one of the Khawārij”?

Answer: ‘Abd al-Mālik Ibn Marwān used to be an oppressive ruler. He killed (the companion) ‘Abd Allāh Ibn Az-Zubayr and one of Ibn Marwān’s delegates even destroyed the Ka’bah. Still, (the companion) ‘Abd Allāh Ibn ‘Umar maintained allegiance and obedience to him after all this, and the remaining companions did the same. By Allāh, he was oppressive, may Allāh have mercy on him. He did have good qualities, he did good deeds, he had victorious conquests, and he performed (legitimate) Jihād. Yet, by Allāh, he was an oppressor, he was unjust. The messenger (Sallallahu Ahlayhi Wassalam) taught time and time again about these circumstances, and these texts are in the two authentic ḥadīth collections (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim & Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī) and in other collections. For example, he said (about the rulers):

“Obey them as long as they establish the prayer among you.”

And he said:

“(You will see things from them) that you know (to be right) and things you dislike.”

And when asked, “Should we oppose them with our swords?” he said:

“No, not as long as they pray.”

These texts were regarding unjust rulers and still the messenger (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim & Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī)instructed (the people) to have patience with them. He did not allow rebelling and opposing them. The one who revolts and renounces allegiance to them (the leaders), then he does so against all the Muslims. In this case, such a person should be killed (legitimately – by capital punishment), even if the ruler he opposed was indeed oppressive.

This understanding is from the Khawārij themselves – they say, “Someone is not considered to be one of the Khawārij unless the ruler he revolts against is a just leader.” By this, they mean that ‘Alī (radiyallah hu anha) was unjust and Uthmān (radiyallah hu anha) was unjust.

Also, those people who glorify Sayyid Qutb view ‘Uthmān as not being a just leader even if they conceal it. Otherwise, why would they glorify Sayyid Qutb who criticizes the justice of ‘Uthmān and nullifies and discredits his leadership? And the leadership (of a ruler) is not to be discredited except in the case of clear disbelief, yet he (Sayyid Qutb) does so because he is a Takfīrī (someone who wrongfully and indiscriminately criticizes people of having committed disbelief). He is the chief of Takfīrīs! He was unable to openly proclaim ‘Uthmān’s disbelief and that of the Rawāfiḍ (the extreme Shīas who curse the companions) at the same time. He actually combined between the Khawārij and Rawāfiḍ ideologies. He carried the banner of the Khawārij and that of the Rawāfiḍ, along with other banners.

He made ‘Uthmān (radiyallah hu anha) out to be a tyrant so we could legitimately rebel against them, and he considered ‘Alī too as an oppressor so we could revolt against him as well and likewise (is the pattern). And Dhū al-Khuwaysarah – you saw how he discredited even the justice of the messenger (Sallallahu Ahlayhi Wassalam). So the issue reaches a point to which there is no limit or real criterion to judge it. Someone who you may consider just is not considered to be just by the one who rebels against him!

So, the solution is that as long as the ruler is within the circle of Islam – and the messenger (real criterion to judge it. Someone who you may consider just is not considered to be just by the one who rebels against him!

So, the solution is that as long as the ruler is within the circle of Islam – and the messenger (Sallallahu Ahlayhi Wassalam) clearly defined it – then even if such a ruler were wicked and oppressive; as long as he is within Islam, as long as he establishes prayer, then it is impermissible to oppose and revolt against him. Have you all understood this? This is the ruling of Allāh and the ruling of the messenger (Sallallahu Ahlayhi Wassalam), not the ruling of the ignorant people.

This is Our Call (The Way of the Salaf)

This is a translated transcription of a lecture delivered by Imaam Al-Albaanee (rahimahullaah) that was recorded and distributed under the title “Hadhihi Da’watunaa” (This is Our Call). The present translation was translated directly from the Arabic audio.

In this lecture, Imaam Al-Albaanee explains the basis of the Salafee Manhaj, which is following the way, understanding and practical application of the Salaf, who were namely the first three generations of Muslims: The Sahaabah, Taabi’een and Atbaa’ at-Taabi’een. They are the ones referred to in the Prophet’s saying: “The best of mankind is my generation, then those that come after them, then those that come after them.”

This is the basis that distinguishes the true call to Islaam from all other false and erroneous calls, regardless if they claim to be “upon the Qur’aan and the Sunnah.” Al-Albaanee goes into depth discussing this fact, that one cannot truly understand and apply the Qur’aan and Sunnah unless he follows the understanding and application of the Salaf. We ask Allaah to accept this effort and benefit the Muslims with it.

Quotes from the Book:

“So here we have given the answer from the ayah and the two hadeeth, we just mentioned. Follow the way of the Believers! The way of those believers from present times? The answer is no, we mean the Believers from the past - the first era - the era of the Companions - the Salaf As-Saalih (pious predecessors). These are the people whom we should take as our example and as the ones whom we follow. And there is absolutely no one equal to them on the face of the earth. Therefore, the essence of our call is based on three pillars - on the (1) Qur'aan, the (2) Sunnah and (3) Following the Salaf As-Saalih (pious predecessors).”

“So everyone claims to follow the Qur'aan and the Sunnah, and how often have we heard this kind of talk from the youth who are in confusion, when they say: ‘Ya akhee, these people claim to follow the Qur'aan and the Sunnah and those people claim to follow the Qur'aan and the Sunnah.’ So what is the clear and decisive distinction? It is the Qur'aan and the Sunnah and the Methodology of the Salaf As-Saalih. So whoever follows the Qur'aan and the Sunnah without following the Salaf As-Saalih, he in fact has not followed the Qur'aan and the Sunnah, rather he has only followed his intellect, if not his desire.”

“After making clear this important condition of "upon the methodology of the Salaf As-Saalih", I must give you some examples. In the past, the Muslims split up into many sects. You hear about the Mu'tazilah, you hear about the Murji'ah, you hear about the Khawaarij, you hear about the Zaidiyyah, not to mention the Shi'a and the Raafidah and so on. There is no one amongst these groups, no matter how deep in misguidance they are, that does not share the same saying as the rest of the Muslims, which is that: "We are on the Qur'aan and the Sunnah." No one amongst them says: "We don’t follow the Qur'aan and the Sunnah." And if one of them were to say that, he would completely leave the fold of Islaam. So then why did they split up so long as all of them rely on the Qur'aan and the Sunnah - and I bear witness that they do rely on the Qur'aan and the Sunnah for support. But how is this relying done? It is done without relying on the third foundation, which is what the Salaf As-Saalih were upon.”

Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Saalih al-'Uthaymeen on April Fools Day

The noble Scholar advises the Muslims who partake in this day (i.e. April 1st) by lying and deceiving each other in jest. He outlines four prohibitions that every Muslim who partakes in the frivolous activities of this day falls into. And he concludes with an advice for the Muslims explaining why they are in such a humiliated position in front of the non-Muslims and he clarifies the way out of this current predicament.
