Those who say ‘I am a Sunni and I am not a Salafi.’

The question:

When this person begins Ruqiyah (reciting Qur’aan upon a person as a form of treatment) he says: ‘I am a Sunni and I am not a Salafi.’

The Shaykh Answered:

‘As for the saying: ‘I am a Sunni and I am not a Salafi.’ Then this statement is contradictory!

The Sunni O you Miskeen (impoverished person) is the Salafi, and the Salafi is the Sunni. Whoever distinguishes between the two then he has distinguished between two things which resemble each other; so the Salaf are the Ahl-ul-Sunnah and the Salafeeyoon are the followers of the Sunnah, and whoever absolves himself from that then he is not a Sunni nor a Salafi!

Just because some of the people claim Salafeeyah and they do not actually exemplify it, then this does not allow you to free yourself from Salafeeyah, rather it is obligatory upon you to honour yourself by ascribing yourself to the Salaf and to the Manhaj of the Salaf, since indeed ascription to that is obligatory.

Ahl-ul-Sunnah, the Salaf, the followers of the Salaf, the Firqat an-Najjeeyah, the Taifat-ul-Mansoorah, the Jamaa’ah, the Salafi and the Sunni, all of these mean one title: and they are the Jamaa’ah, and they are similar to those whom were upon what the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- and his Companions were upon.

So be a serious Salafi – be a serious Salafi, just like the Salaf used to say – a Salafi ascribing to the Manhaj of the Salaf in sayings, actions and belief.

And I believe that whoever brags with this type of talk (‘I am a Sunni and I am not a Salafi.’) is very far from the Manhaj of the Sunni which is the Manhaj of the Salaf.

May Allaah give everyone the capability to obtain beneficial knowledge and righteous actions. May Allaah send prayers, peace and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his Family and all his Companions.’

The Supplication for When Things Become Difficult for a Person

2886 – From Anas that The Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

‘O Allaah there is nothing that is easy except that You made it easy, and You can make this difficulty easy if You so wish to’

اللهم لا سهلَ إلا ما جعلتَه سهلاً وأنتَ تجعلُ الحزنَ إذا شئتَ سهلاً

Allaahumma la sahala illa ma ja’alta sahlan wa anta taj’all al-huzna itha shitta sahlan

Collected by Ibn Hibban in ‘Saheeh’, Ibn Sunni, and ad-Deeya in ‘al-Mukhtar’ and shaykh Albani declared it Saheeh upon the conditions of Muslim.

If the Bell is the Musical Instrument of Shaytaan, What about your Melodious Ringtones?

‘O Muslims - Music Intoxicates the Intellect!!
Ridding your house (if you can) of any type of bells

Abu Hurayrah reported Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) as saying:
“The bell is the musical instrument of Shaytaan.”(1)

If this is the case, - the bell is the musical instrument of Iblees - then how could it be that a Muslim claiming to fear Allaah, has reverberating in their cars or pounding in their homes; jazz, rhythm and blues, pop, hip-hop, gangster rap tunes or the like? Much worse than that, is the musical tune coming from the mobile/cell phones in the houses of Allaah, especially during the times of salaah!

Shaykhul Islaam Ibnul-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah said in his book ‘Madaarijus Saalikeen’ (1/485) said:
“How astonishing! That is, what type of faith, light, insight, guidance and knowledge can be gained from listening to tuneful verse and music in which most of what is said is prohibited and warrants that Allaah be angry with and would warrant the punishment of Allaah and His Messenger?"

He also said in his book ‘Ighaathatul-Lahfaan’ (1/258-259)
“Singing [and music] is worse and more harmful than stories of emperors, because it directs [one] to adultery and fornication and it is the fountainhead of hypocrisy. It is the snare of the Shaytaan, and it intoxicates the intellect. Its obstructing (people) from the Qur’aan is worse than any way in which other types of phony speech blocks them, because the souls of people lean towards [sounds like this] and have the desire to listen to it”.

How can anyone who has the slightest amount of baseerah (keen insight) and life in his heart attempting to draw near to Allaah and increase his faith by enjoying something which is hated by Him, and He loathes the one who says it and the one who accepts it?
